Three killed in police firing on protesting farmers

Last Updated 09 August 2011, 09:53 IST

The farmers who took to street attacked policemen and brought vehicular traffic on Mumbai-Pune highway to a standstill leading the police to use force, Superintendent Pune Rural police Sandip Karnik said.

The farmers were objecting to the pipeline and acquisition of their land for a project to facilitate water supply to the industrial township of Pimpri Chinchwad.

Police fired after teargas and rubber bullets failed to quell the rioters, Karnik said.
Villagers in the vicinity of the pipeline project today observed a bandh in support of their demands.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Council were adjourned for the day over the firing issue.
