Miskiw, 61, was arrested on suspicion of phone hacking, Scotland Yard said. He was arrested after visiting a police station by appointment by officers working on Operation Weeting.

Miskiw was arrested on suspicion of unlawful interception of communications and on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications. He is the 12th person to be arrested since the start of the inquiry.

Miskiw had left the UK after being alleged to have repeatedly authorised illegal voicemail hacking. He was reported to be living in Florida. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph on 21 July, Miskiw said: "I'm returning to the UK voluntarily. My solicitors have been talking to the police for some time now. They know where I am and they know I'm returning. That's all I have to say."

Asked if he expected to be arrested, as several of his ex-colleagues have been, Miskiw had said: "I don't know". He declined to answer when asked if he authorised hacking at the newspaper, or if he had hacked the voicemail of Milly Dowler, the Surrey schoolgirl who was murdered in 2002.
