BSP takes out mock funeral procession against illegal mining

Last Updated 10 August 2011, 17:20 IST

A scarecrow placed on a pyre and decorated with three earthen pots denoting Congress, Janata Dal (Secular) and BJP was the cynosure of all the eyes when the protesters marched on the various thoroughfares in the city.

They alleged that the recent report on illegal mining submitted by the previous Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde has unmasked the successive governments ruled in the past.

Though the government permitted 165 mine companies to export 470 lakh tonnes of iron ore, the hands behind the unholy business exported a whopping 775 lakh tonnes of the precious natural resources.

According to an estimated it has resulted in the loss of Rs 60,000 crore to the exchequer.

The Supreme Court constituted central empowered committee (CEC) in its affidavit has fretted that the natural resources may go extinct in 20 years, if the illegal activity continued in the same pace.

The situation may arise when the nation has to import iron ore from other countries.

The protesters said that the only way to conserve iron ore is by teaching a fitting lesson to the political parties supporting the activity.
