The world number five needed only 55 minutes for the triumph over the German which saw him through to a third round meeting with fellow American Sam Querrey on Thursday.

American John Isner served 20 aces to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, while ninth seed Mardy Fish also crashed out, losing 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Germany's Philipp Petzschner.

The 16th-seeded Querrey advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Igor Kunitsyn of Russia.
Fourth seed Fernando Gonzalez defeated qualifier Alejandro Falla of Colombia 7-5, 7-5 and Swede Robin Soderling breezed past Russia's Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-1.

Sania in round two

Targetting her second consecutive singles title, top seed Sania Mirza faced stiff resistance from American Mallory Cecil before snatching a hard earned 6-4, 7-5 win in the first round of the ITF women’s tournament in Vancouver.

Bhupathi-Knowles exit

Mahesh Bhupathi and his partner Mark Knowles, seeded third, crashed out of the ATP Legg Mason Classic event in Washington after losing their quarterfinal match to Martin Damm and Robert Lindstedt 6-3, 1-6, 14-16.

Meanwhile, Prakash Amritraj lost to Marcos Baghdatis 4-6, 1-6 in the second round of the ATP Vancouver Open.

Sharapova advances

A pumped up Maria Sharapova overcame Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the third round of the LA Championships on Wednesday.

World number one and top seed Dinara Safina also moved ahead with a clinical 6-2, 6-4 victory over Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova.

Sharapova faces Alona Bondarenko in the third round on Thursday, who beat Lucie Safarova 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
