Addressing an interaction programme at Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Thursday, FKCCI President J R Bangera said that the award will be conferred on September 15 in Bangalore by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda. Opposition Leader in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley will deliver the keynote address. Dr Heggade was the unanimous choice of the selection committee, said Bangera.

Summit

Bangera said that a coastal business development summit will be held in Mangalore in November.

The main aim of the summit will be to develop the servicing, trade and manufacturing sector.

“The preparation work for the summit will start with the first committee meeting of the coastal region development committee.

Emphasis on SMEs

Bangera said that FKCCI believes that depending on manufacturing sector for the well being of the country is a must. Hence, the FKCCI has been urging the government to encourage manufacturing sector as the whole with special emphasis on Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) because more employment can be generated through SMEs.

He said that when industrial estates are designed, the government must make sure that the infrastructure is first developed and then the estates are designed because haphazard planning in the past is now making most of the industrial areas suffer due to lack of water, power, road connectivity, hygiene etc.

“All these factors are very crucial especially if we are looking at inviting foreign investors,” said Bangera adding that the district is naturally blessed with conducive topography, which enables the district to reach out to other regions easily.

“However, there is a need to develop roads, especially the NH 66 and 48. The Expressway should be designed in this region too so as to give boost to trade,” he said adding that the long pending Canara Industrial Estate must be materialised and it must be earmarked for food processing.

KCCI President Latha R Kini and other office-bearers were present.
