Two bullets hit the animal on the neck and three on the back. At 5 pm, the injured deer came running from the Hosur estate side and fell into a pond belonging to Mohan of Darbarpet.

A couple of wild dogs were found chasing the animal, said Halasulige GP vice-president Suresh Alva and others, who were witness to the incident. Forest personnel rushed to the spot after Range Forest Officer (RFO) Ratnaprabha was informed about the incident.

The deer breathed its last as soon as the forest staff lifted it from the pond. It is suspected that the animal may have been shot between 4:30 pm and 5 pm. The forest personnel suspect that professional hunters may have shot it dead.

The RFO said that a case had been registered in this connection. She said that there had been no incident of deer being hunted in the range in the last two years and that Friday’s incident would be considered seriously.
