NITK student bags Rs 60-lakh pay packet

Less than a month after multinational companies visited NITK — formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College — for recruitment, one student has been offered a whopping Rs 60 lakh as salary (per annum) by social networking portal Facebook, setting a new benchmark in campus recruitments in the country.

Two other students have been offered Rs 57 lakh and Rs 50 lakh per annum, respectively, by Microsoft. All the three are seventh-semester students of Computer Science and Information Technology and will complete their studies in April-May 2012. They are expected to join their new jobs in May-June 2012.

3 get Rs 50 lakh package
Speaking with Deccan Herald over the phone from New Delhi, NITK Director Prof Sandeep Sancheti said three students (all males) were offered more than Rs 50 lakh and more than 10 students had received salary offers of over Rs 20 lakh per annum from Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, National, Tata Consultancy and Bajaj Auto.

So far, only 25 per cent of the recruitments (about 300 jobs) have taken place and the rest would be done in the coming months, Sancheti added.

NITK placement officer Prof R Shivshankar said the average salary received by the students of NITK in the last academic year was Rs 5.3 lakh, while it has gone up to Rs 10 lakh this academic year, in spite of the economic downgrade.

“The NITK has been maintaining its standard. As a premier institute, it has a very good track record and IT giants from across the globe are visiting the campus for recruitments,” said Sancheti. The institute offers nine undergraduate courses as well as 20 postgraduate courses.
