JOIN US Two debt-ridden farmers committed suicide in the State on Sunday.
A debt-stressed farmer from Karlagadde village near Hilluru in Ankola taluk, Uttara Kannada district, committed suicide by consuming poison on Saturday night. The incident came to light on Sunday morning.
The deceased, Seetharam Belagu Agera (40) and his five brothers together own two acres of land. Seetharam had borrowed loans to the tune of Rs 80,000. Unable to repay loans, he is said to have taken the extreme step, according to family members.
A case has been registered in this regard at the Ankola police station.
Unable to cope with mounting debts and crop failure, a 35-year-old farmer from Keshavpur village under Handiganal gram panchayat in Shidlaghatta taluk Chikkaballapur district committed suicide by consuming unknown poison on his farm on Saturday.
Family members had rushed Ambarish who was lying unconscious at his farm to the government hospital in the town. Ambarish failed to respond to treatment and died on Sunday morning.
It is said, the victim had taken loans, running into Rs 3 lakh, from private moneylenders.
The deceased farmer is survived by his wife, and two minor children.
MLA M Rajanna, ex-MLA V Muniyappa, Chikkaballapur Assistant Commissioner Amaresh, Tahsildar G A Narayanaswamy and others visited the house of the farmer to console the family members.
