'Black day' for teachers in Udupi

Teachers Day was observed as Black day by Udupi District unit of Karnataka State Secondary Co-teachers Association and lecturers of Udupi district Pre University Colleges.

Forwarding the memorandum to Deputy Commissioner M T Reju, Udupi District unit of Karnataka State Secondary Co-teachers Association President Bhaskar Shetty alleged that despite several attempts to convince government over the pathetic condition of high school co-teachers, the association has failed to get the demands fulfilled.

Teachers should be offered benefits of medical allowances and health insurance schemes. Their promotion should be done based on 75:25 following the recommendations of Administrative Tribunal. Special remuneration for the teachers recruited after August 2008 should be continued, he added.

Simultaneously, lecturers of Udupi district Pre University Colleges staged protest demanding hike in the salary, before DC’s Office. Forwarding the memorandum to Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda through DC M T Reju, the lecturers expressed their dissatisfaction over the wages offered.

They demanded that eligible lecturers employed in Pre University colleges should be promoted to Degree Colleges. Pension facilities should be provided to part time lectures. The wage for lectures should be hiked up to Rs 14,050 and that of Principal should be raised to Rs 18,050, they said.

Accident

The Teachers’ Day celebration today for the lecturers and students of a Junior college has virtually become a “Black Day” as four lecturers of the college met with an accident in the morning and sustained serious injuries at Udyavara.

As they approached Udyavara, the car in which they were traveling collided against a speeding private Express Bus. All the four occupants of the car sustained serious injuries and one among them with critical injuries. The critically wounded person has been admitted to Manipal KMC Hospital.
