This follows media reports, besides grave concern expressed by a section of the society for doing nothing to preserve the building, once a source of inspiration for the great writer.

Showcause notice

MCC commissioner K S Raykar who held a meeting of officers on Tuesday morning said that a showcause notice has been issued to the assistant commissioner Thimmappa who gave permission to go ahead with the demolition.

The MCC is understood to have sent a missive to the heritage department to declare such buildings in the city as heritage property to enable the local body to act against such activities.

That apart, the corporation wants urban development and Kannada and culture departments to take measures to restore the building, and convert the same into a museum. The departments should also release adequate funds for the purpose, it has said.
