The evening began with a prayer led by Ashley and Aarti Desikan which was followed by Sound of Music, a quintessential part of any musical tribute with the word broadway in the title. The choir, which was accompanied by the orchestra, performed popular hits as Do Re Me, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Raindrops Keep Falling on My head, Evergreen and Autumn Leaves.

Akshetha and Shruti, the youngest members of the choir performed a medley from the Jungle Book and Annie. The audience were amazed by the vocal talent of these young girls. Soloist Aarti Desikan and Ashley’s duet Autumn Leaves merits a mention. Ranjith Samuel, the guitarist, was easily the best part of the orchestra.

A very special mention must be made of Linan, who performed a Chopin solo on the piano. The depth of this 11-year-old’s interpretation of the grandmaster left most spellbound. Utterly posed and confident, Linan is a musician to watch out for. Her
performance was without doubt the best of the evening.

The choirs of Baldwin’s Boys’ and Girls’ High School, and the Frank Anthony Public School also performed at the event. The Baldwin’s Boys’ performance of a Zulu folk song and a African folk song was enjoyable.  To ensure that the audiences felt connected to the performance, Ashley had woven in a brief but well-thought out introduction before most songs. These introductions had  interesting trivia about the original composer or the first
performance of the song.

The principal of the Baldwin’s Boys’ High School addressed the audience and remembered J T. Speaking of the inspiration that J T was, he said J T will always be special to his school. He mentioned that J T had nurtured the musical talent of both Sandeep Chowta and Amit Heri.
