Over 100 calls on Day 1

The helpline is attended by doctors from Bangalore urban and rural areas and has four counters.

The doctors will work on shift basis from 8 am to 2 pm, 2 pm to 8 pm and 8 pm to 8 am, said Dr Komala, a doctor from Bangalore rural, who was assigned to attend the calls.

Speaking about the kind of queries that were addressed, she said, “People wanted to know about the symptoms, how to proceed if they had cough and cold, what were the facilities available, charges, etc.” There were also calls from parents worried about their wards. She said that each counter attended to around 25 calls on Tuesday.

Interestingly, Dr Lokesh, District Health Officer of Bangalore rural, pointed out that the helpline received 60 phone calls between the gap of 2.30 pm and 5 pm. The doctors are chosen by district health officer and taluk health officer at random and are operating from the State Health department’s premises.
