<p>Jayalakshmi M and Mohammed Aslam A K were conferred with three gold medals and Best Student of Final Year BTech (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering) and Best Outgoing Student in BTech (Civil Engineering) respectively.<br /><br />Jayalakshmi, who hails from Mangalore is now pursuing her MTech in Metallurgical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. She said she was interested in basic science from the beginning. “After I joined NITK, Prof Ramakanth Hebbar guided me on the scope in Metallurgical Engineering. I owe my success to my teachers at NITK,” she told Deccan Herald.<br /><br />A trained Bharathanatyam dancer, Jayalakshmi is also preparing for Vidwath examination. “Bharatanatyam did not come in the way of my studies. Instead, it helped me in maintaining my composure,” she added.<br /><br />Jayalakshmi has won Sudarshan Bhat Memorial prize for the best student of final year BTEch; Karthik Alloys gold medal instituted by Bhupal Gopala for securing highest marks in Industrial Metallurgy related subjects, Prof H V Sudhakar Nayak gold medal for first rank holder in BTech and institutional gold medal for securing first rank in BTech. Her father, Seetharam Poojary is a retired principal while her mother teaches in the University College.<br /><br />Mohammed Aslam hails from Kasargod in Kerala and is now pursuing his MTech in geo-technical engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. He is the first engineer in his family.<br /><br />He has won U S Mallya Memorial prize for the best student of the final year BTech (Civil Engineering), Prof M N Shivashankar gold medal for first rank holder, Dr R K Yaji gold medal for the best outgoing student, and institutional gold medal for securing first rank in BTech. <br /><br />PhD was conferred on 38 candidates at the convocation while an equal number of scholars received gold medals for outstanding academic performance.<br /></p>
