Speaking at a press conference, he said a target to cover at least 85 per cent of the population of Mandya district by March 2012 has been set and the centres would be set-up depending on the facilities provided by the district administration.
Talking about touts, Ravindran said the issuance of Unique Identification number was completely free of cost right from the issuance of application form to the final card.
Stating that Aadhaar is a 12 digit number, which would include retina, photograph and finger imprints of citizens, he said it was necessary for all citizens — including children — for availing all government benefits and for personal transactions.
He said Aadhaar was supposed to check fraud and cheating and added that if people provide identity and address proof, the cards would reach their doorsteps within 15 days by registered post.
Responding to a query, he clarified that the number would remain permanent even if the address of a citizen changes, the address on the card would be altered on receipt of a requisition. Additional deputy commissioner Jayanna was present at the press conference.
