Telecom service providers though are yet to ascertain the impact of the TRAI move, but the customers seem to be upset. The Telecom industry sources said most service providers would now have a tough task in ‘reworking’ the packages to attract the youth.
“It is yet to be ascertained whether people, especially the youth, will welcome the regulation by TRAI. But as service providers, none can go against the TRAI diktat. Certain service providers are already in the process of reworking the packages which target youngsters,” said the industry source.

The source said it would take some time for the youngsters to ‘digest’ the cap on these SMSes and eventually move on to other available modes of communication through the mobile phones.

From increasing the talktime to providing value-added services, service providers are now looking at all possible opportunities to retain their market share among the youth.

When Deccan Herald contacted, few youngsters welcomed the TRAI directive. “We have already received messages from our service providers on the TRAI move. It is obviously going to have a impact on our social networking,” said Sneha, a student from Indian Academy

Amit Srikanth, an engineering student from the City, said the move would not help the regulatory authority in curbing the pesky calls and SMSes sent for commercial purposes.

“With many other options available for the urban mobile users to avoid pesky calls and SMSes, including Do Not Disturb (DND) options, we cannot believe that the new rule by TRAI will also help in curbing the same,” he said.

Navaneet Perde, an IT professional who in the earlier days would have shown concern over the news of a cap on SMSes, was not bothered with the TRAI diktat. “Today, the mode of communication through cellphones has changed. With more and more PDA (personal digital assistant) phones in the market, instant messaging and automatic updates on social networking sites keep the youth connected. It has become the new buzzword and SMSes are slowly dying,” he claimed.

Registered category

As per the revised guidelines of the TRAI, mobile / telephone users registered in DND category will not get any promotional SMS/calls unless they register their preferred category of receiving them.

Accordingly, from September 27, customers will not be able to receive SMS/calls pertaining to services if your number is in DND.

And if you wish to continue to receive SMS /calls, register under the various categories as provided by the TRAI with your preference by visiting your telephone / mobile service provider’s website.
