Plan to supply water from surface sources

Last Updated 11 May 2009, 17:56 IST

The government has selected Chitradurga and Bijapur district to implement the project on a pilot basis.

Minister for Urban Development Suresh Kumar, on Monday, said that underground water table has depleted across the State and it carries higher concentration of fluoride. The best way to tackle this situation was to rely on surface sources - river, tank and reservoirs. The government had named this project as ‘Kannada Ganga’.

On a pilot basis project would be worked out to provide water from surface sources for residents of Chitradurga and Bijapur. “The detail project reports of both the projects will be ready by August this year”, he said.

24X7 supply

The minister said that eight wards each in Belgaum, Hubli-Dharwad and Gulbarga corporations had been provided with drinking water round the clock. The programme, launched on a pilot basis, received good response. The government had taken a decision to extend the same to all wards in the respective corporations.

No auction of CA sites

Replying to a question the minister said that the government would not auction sites meant for civic amenities. He said, many CA sites had been allotted to various institutes on lease. “Once the lease period is over, the State government can renew the lease agreement, withdraw the land from the lease-holder or sell it to the lease-holder at the market price. The government  will take decision on this, but auctioning is not before the government,” he said.
