Dhoni lauds youngsters' performance

"He is still in that stage of his career where he is improving as a cricketer. It was good to see Virat carry on today, and Gautam also batted brilliantly. There was some swing for the England bowlers and it was important to get a partnership going to put pressure on them. The Gautam-Virat partnership was very good from the team’s perspective.”

India have become a very good chasing side of late. “We have chased down targets in the range of 270-290 which are considered slightly difficult,” Dhoni agreed. “We have improved as a unit when it comes to chasing, and that’s a very heartening development.”

Dhoni was asked what India were doing differently now from when they were beaten 3-0 in England in the one-day series. “There is no one particular reason,” he replied, “but the most important reason was a wet ball which took our spinners out of the equation. That, and the fact that often the D/L method came into play in truncated matches and made it easier for the chasing side – they contributed to our defeats in England.”

England captain Alastair Cook said a second straight heavy defeat, following their 126-run loss in Hyderabad, was a cause for concern. “Losing heavily once is fine, but twice is a bit of a concern,” he mumbled. “We have prepared well but we have to produce the goods in the middle. The conditions obviously play a huge part. Just as India struggled in England, we are struggling in India. But there is no reason why we cant turn it around.”
