Competing with a strained hamstring, the Indian managed only 5.43 metres in long jump, the fifth event. She now has a tally of 3774 points. The 25-year-old has a best of 6.24 metres.

On Sunday, she touched 5.43 in her first attempt, fouled her second-round jump and closed it out with a 4.70M effort.

Sushmitha had timed 25.65 seconds in 200 metres, the final event on the first day, against her best of 23.78.  Meanwhile Joseph Abraham, who had finished seventh in his first round heat of the 400M hurdles, was later disqualified for a trail leg violation.

The Indian record holder at 49.51 seconds, Abraham had hoped to do well here, but he was done in by a poor strategy.

“It was a fast heat and I made the mistake of trying to match them, instead of running my race,” said a dejected Abraham, who wasn’t aware of the disqualification till Sunday morning. “I don’t know why I have been disqualified, I am not aware whether I made any mistakes during the race.”
