For example, none knew that Mayawati’s father Prabhu Dayal would have gone for a second marriage after his first wife had three female issues, including Mayawati. “People had advised my father to go for a second marriage as they felt that my mother might not bear a male child,” she said.

Her grandfather, however, shot down the idea saying that there was no difference between boys and girls.

Mayawati’s mother was later blessed with sons.
In an rare public reference to her family life, Mayawati on Saturday while speaking at a function after inaugurating a university for the disabled in the state capital, described in detail about her early life and also about her family taking every one by surprise.
She also talked about her grandfather Mangal Sen as well as her father Prabhu Dayal. “I have always been inspired by my grandfather,” she said.

“My grandfather had lost his vision yet he made sure that my father received proper education... he never allowed his physical disability to come in his way and proved that one can achieve success despite suffering from disability if one has determination and strong will power,” she said.

She said her grandfather had expressed his wish to the family to do something for the physically challenged people. “Today I have fulfilled his wish by inaugurating a varsity for the disabled,” she said dedicating it to her grandfather.
