Cariappa's house in shambles

It was former Chief Minister J H Patel who inaugurated the library in 1999. Prior to the library, the building was functioning as Nada Kacheri. The house is in deplorable condition. The board which is hung outside the building reads as Field Marshal K M Cariappa Memorial building. The board reminds us that the house was the place where Cariappa was born. The portrait of Cariappa was given to the library recently.

After Cariappa was promoted as as Field Marshal, the Bharathi Vidya Institute had honoured him in Shanivarasanthe. He was taken out in an open jeep, say elders in Shanivarasanthe. In the past an action plan was prepared to install the bust of Cariappa in front of the house. A sum of Rs 50,000 was earmarked for the purpose. However, the project was never realised.

As a first Commander in Chief of Independent India, he has taken the responsibility of three wings. Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa was born on January 28, 1899. His father Kodandera Madappa was serving in the revenue department. Shanivarasanthe is noticed in the world map owing to K M Cariappa. The house should be developed as a memorial, say the locals.
