A six-member gang armed with lethal weapons attacked Velu (30), a fruit merchant, and hacked him to death. The police said, Velu, a rowdy-sheeter in the City Market police station, was on his way to the temple when the crime took place.

Around 5.45 am, Velu - who was wearing Ayyappa mala - was on his way for the daily rituals at the temple. The gang, which knew about Velu’s routine, attacked him.

Sources said there was rivalry between Velu and Rudra, a rowdy.  In 2005, Rudra had eliminated Velu’s brother Shanmugam. Within three months, Velu saw to it that Rudra’s brother was killed. Velu was a resident of Ramanna Garden. Usually, small time rowdies are under the impression that they are safe during the Ayyappa season. But Velu’s murder has disproved the notion.
