Madhya Pradesh tallied 255 points to be crowned champions for second straight time. MP won 34 gold, 24 silver, 10 bronze medals while hosts Karnataka finished the championship with five gold, one silver and five bronze.

Services could have challenged the dominance of the holders but with only male competitiors in their team they couldn’t muster enough points. But helped by James, Services won the men’s team championship for the 20th time on the trot, starting from 1992 in Delhi.

James collected his fifth gold by winning the men’s Canoe-1 200-metre (C-1) final, timing 42.42 seconds. James, who had won four gold medals in each of the five previous nationals, won the C-1 and C-4 1000M, C-1, C-4 500M and C-1 200M yellow metals here.

On the final day, Twisha K Prasad bagged the Sub-junior girls’ Kayak-1 (K-1) 200M gold, clocking 50.25 seconds, easily beating her rival Anusha from Kerala. The Karnataka kayaker thus ended the championship with five titles — women’s K-1 1000M and 5000M, Junior girls K-1 500M, Sub-junior K-1 500M — which also helped her to win the outstanding female athlete award.
