Owners of granite industries, over the last five years, have engaged in rampant and surreptitious use of aerolite, after obtaining permits to use water-based cutting machines.
Effluents from the units using aerolite rob the soil of it’s fertility. Deccan Herald had carried a report on unchecked use of aerolite at the granite units in its edition dated August 8, 2011.
During a hearing of public grievances on Monday, Justice Nayak took the district environment officer to task for allowing the use of aerolite. Hescom also invited the wrath of Justice Nayak for not disconnecting power supply to such units. Reacting to Hescom’s defense that power supply could not be disconnected as the staff at the units assaulted it’s personnel, Nayak directed his ire towards the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police also.
