Jharkhand, the eastern state of India which was less known to the people shot into popularity with the inclusion of Mahendra Singh Dhoni into the Indian cricket team eleven.

Just like our national hero Dhoni, Tassar silk of Jharkhand state is also making waves in the international market and has also bagged the prestigious Organic Silk certificate from One Cert Asia, an International organisation. No other silk known for its purity, elegance and tradition in the country has got such a recognition in the global arena.

This Tassar silk is a natural silk and the silk worms are not grown in bamboo mats (chandrike) as done in our state and fed by mulberry leaves but are reared on live trees of Arjun and Asan in forest areas. This is a complete outdoor rearing and the worms too are usually larger in size when compared to local worms here.

Beautiful women who prefer bright Kanjeevarams and Mysore silks and those whose favourite are the subtle silks that reflect their personality, have a choice here as the Jharcraft, a permanent outlet at JSS Urban Haat, has a wide choice for both the categories and also have beautiful embroidered kantha on Tassar and a lot more.

Apart from sarees you have colourful dress materials, multi-coloured and printed stoles, Kurtas, ties, shawls, salwar kameez, silk coats and jackets, cushion cover and silk shirts for men, all in Tassar.

The outlet also has a wide range of bamboo, cane, leather products, brass items  right from Jharkhand that can add a touch of elegance to your drawing room.

Speaking to City Herald, Mukesh Gope, Regional Manager, Jharcraft, Bangalore, said Jharkhand is the leading silk producer in the country. While it produces 60 per cent, the rest of India produces 40 pc of silk, he says. Jharcraft was started as an organisation to create new opportunities in rural areas with an objective to change lives throughout the state.

The main objective of Jharcraft is to provide a marketing space for the merchandise manufactured by the local artisans, self help groups and NGOs. The organisation provides all possible support to them in terms of finance, raw materials, design assistance, marketing and others. This has also decreased the migration rate of the people going to other states in search of jobs and ensures that each woman associated with the organisation earns Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 per month, which is sure to make a revolution of sorts, he says.

They have also plans to open two new outlets in Mysore city, along with the current outlet in JSS Urban Haat. So, it is the right time to look dignified draped with a Tassar silk and welcome the new year. The outlet is open from 10 am to 9 pm.
