A school headmaster fell to death from the top of a four-storey private hospital in Basaveshwarnagar Tuesday morning.

Lakshmaiah, 49, of Dasenahalli near Thyamagondlu at Nelamangala taluk, was working at a government primary school in Tattegere village. He was admitted to the hospital on Chord Road on December 23, after he complained of chest pain, backache and vomiting, police said.

The doctors diagnosed him with dengue and he was treated at the ICU. On Monday, he was shifted to the ward.

The police said, Lakshmaiah, who was under depression, used to claim that the doctors would kill him. On Tuesday, he got up around 5.30 am and went out, telling his wife Sharadamma that he wanted to answer the call of nature, police said.

A duty nurse, who came to the ward for routine monitoring, found the headmaster missing and woke up Sharadamma, who was fast asleep. They searched the entire hospital building for him, but couldn’t trace him.

Someone noticed a man fallen on an open site behind the hospital around 10.30 am and alerted the hospital authorities.

In her complaint, Sharadamma said her husband found it difficult to balance himself due to the ailment. He lost balance and fell down, she added. The couple have a daughter aged 12 and a son aged nine.
