With an aim of doing its bit for the environment, Surana Independent Pre University College recently launched ‘Eco Club’ called ‘Avani’.

The club has PU students as its members and will ensure that it raises awareness and also sensitises students towards their surroundings. The inauguration had artist and writer M S Murthy and Uma Basavanyappa, the deputy director PU Education Department, Bangalore South, as the chief guests.

The students are excited about the club and feel that they finally have a platform where they can actually learn and practically do something for the environment. Says Archana, a student, “One always sees people talk so much about the environment but rarely do anything. But through this club, we can actually do so many things and make that change.”

Apoorva, another student, feels that change must begin at home. “The activities should not be just restricted to the college. We must come back home and ensure that we continue doing things like using less electricity and more solar power and so on,” she adds.

The club has many events lined up for the year like walkathons, environment management competitions and tree plantations. “We want the students to be aware of their surroundings and be sensitive to the environment as well. We are starting off with small activities and as the club grows so will the events,” says Chandrashekarappa, the principal.

Nitu Shree, a student, says that she is eager to take part in many of the activities as she is genuinely interested in the environment. “I have always loved nature and that itself has motivated me to join the club. It is going to be tough balancing studies and activities but I will do my best to keep some time for the club activities as well,” she adds.

The function for the launch of the club was followed by sapling plantation and the chief guests apprised the students about various environmental issues and how the youngsters can motivate themselves and others to make a difference.
