A snake peeps out of your arm and at times you even have a girl smiling through your shoulder. You can have anything that you want and let your tattoo tell your tale.

There are various reasons why one gets a tattoo. Some do it for a loved one, while others do it in the memory of someone dear who passed away. “The trend for body art has increased immensely now as people are more open about their identity. They know who they are and are not shy to reveal personal details about their life,” says Vinaya Viswanathan, marketing head in Mike’s Tattoo Parlour in C R Park.

A tattoo is made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. Tattoos on humans are a type of body modification, and tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification purposes.

Lokesh Verma, who owns two tattoo parlours in G K I and Vasant Vihar each, by the name of Devil’z Tattooz, says, “Today, people’s purchasing power has gone up, so they can afford to splurge on body art. Moreover, people have become more educated about tattoos now.”

He also adds, “I started out in 2004 with just 10 to 15 clients in a month and now I get more than 300 clients in a  month.” And, the demand is ever-increasing. Lokesh now has seven more tattoo artists assisting him.

Another tattoo parlour Affinity have hygiene prime on their mind. “We take care of hygiene as we open the needles in front of our clients and show them each and everything what we are using on their skin,” says Divya Goel, manager, Affinity in South Extension.

She also adds that the most common designs for females are dolphins and angels.

There are some who are unhappy though. Jatin Sharma, how owns Tattoo Adda in G K I, has a different story to tell.

He blames various websites that offer body art at a lesser rate and feels that it is ruining thier business. “These sites are eating away the business of professional tattoo artists,” says Jatin.
