A journey within

This is yet another art event for Delhiites, especially for the art lovers. Gallery Espace will present works of two artists in the form of drawing books and scrolls, starting January 27 to February 27 at New Friends Colony from 11 am to 7 pm.

Titled Narratives of the Self, the event is being held in collaboration with India Art Fair 2012, and is an effort to present the artistic expression of an artist’s personal life.

Renu Modi, director, Gallery Espace, says, “I too have been collecting contemporary Indian art since the 1980s, but I realised that such exhibitions are a great platform for artists to showcase their talent and express their inner self.”

Artist Chintan Upadhyay whose work will be on display during the exhibition has auctioned his piece d’ art worldwide but feels that Narratives of the Self is a chance to peep within and know who he really is as an artist. Another such artist is Nilima Sheikh who has an artistic career of over 40 years and has a “traditional” style of expression. Another artist to watch out for will be Pakistan’s Mir Mohammad Ali Talpur, while Manjunath Kamath draws his experience from the every day life. For the exhibition, he will portray detailed images of buildings, animals, clouds and signs from domestic and urban contexts. In an age of video art installation, Manju has given a new language to contemporary art.

Jyoti Bhatt, another artist who will be participating in the exhibition has prepared his drawing book from 1961 to 1962, depicting the period when he was in Italy.

“There are eight of my drawings which have been showcased in the art gallery. I couldn’t do more, since I lost my eyesight sometime ago and I don’t draw anymore,” he says.
