A woman has been arrested for kidnapping a three-year-old boy from Uttam Nagar area of west Delhi for her childless niece, police said on Tuesday.

Urmila Srivastav, 37, of Vikas Nagar in west Delhi, was arrested on Monday for kidnapping Mohammad Zeeshan of house no 545 in J J Colony.

Zeeshan’s father Gulshan Khan had filed a complaint at Uttam Nagar police station on January 11 claiming that his son had gone missing.

“During initial investigation, a fruit vendor in the locality informed that he had seen a woman taking Zeeshan.

“He has also claimed that the the boy was the child of her neighbour,” said V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west).

The vendor was later briefed to remain vigilant and inform police as and when he finds the same woman.

“He noticed the same woman on Monday and informed police. Following which Urmila was apprehended,” Renganathan added.

Urmila initially denied all the allegations levelled against her. However, on sustained interrogation, she told police that she had kidnapped Zeeshan and handed him over to her niece Sunita.

“Urmila gave the child to Sunita, as she was married for the last 12 to 13 years, but had no issue,” Renganathan said.

Police recovered Zeeshan at her instance from Sunita house at Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday morning.

“Sunita and her husband Mahipal were also arrested for involvement in the case,” said Renganathan.

Last month, a woman was arrested in New Delhi after she kidnapped a baby to be given to another girl, who could not conceive.

Since most babies are picked up when not accompanied by an adult, the police have asked parents to be around their children when they go out to play at isolated spots.
