BMTC may bring surveillance systems

Last Updated 22 January 2012, 19:20 IST

BMTC is likely to introduce closed circuit camera surveillance system along with a digital video recording device in its buses.

Following guidelines proposed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNurm) scheme in 2011, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation has called for tenders from chassis manufacturers for the procurement of 300 BS 4 compliant buses which have an in built closed circuit camera surveillance system.

These buses with a floor height of 900 mm were expected to be procured in 2011 as per original plan. However the guidelines set under JnNurm funding scheme came after BMTC had called for tenders to procure buses for the previous year and thus it got postponed to 2012.

Speaking to Deccan Herald BMTC Managing Director K Srinivas said the surveillance system is not the usual CCTVs but includes a monitoring screen with a revolving camera attached. The equipment costs not more than Rs 30,000. Sources from BMTC say that Ashok Leyland or Tata, whoever is chosen through the tender to supply the 300 buses will have the option open to them to not provide the additional accessories.
