Apart from giving a glimpse of the hinterland, Suttur has become the favourite of a majority of the youth, who have arrived from other towns and cities to participate in various programmes being organised at the six-day jathra.

While a few had the opportunity to stay in Suttur for a couple of days to participate in sports events, others got a chance to savour the delicious food served at the jathra. For many others, it was the large variety of shops selling products ranging from fashion accessories to eatables that made an impact on them. With the festive look giving a perfect backdrop, a dip in the Kapila river became a favourite for many.

Pradeep, a student said that he had come to cheer his friends, who were participating in the volleyball tournament. Even though he wasn’t a player, the description from his friends about the town were sufficient to lure him to the place. He said, “I joined college this year and this is my first time here. I really didn’t know that a jathra is so colourful.”

Wrestling tournament

Minister for animal husbandry and public libraries Revu Naik Belamagi inaugurated the wrestling tournament here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Belamagi said that he was an avid fan of wrestling. “I actually wanted to inaugurate the tournament by wrestling in the ‘akhada’, but time constraints don’t allow me,” he bemoaned.

The tournament has 40 pair of wrestling slugging it out against each other. A large crowd gathered at the ‘akhada’ to watch the bouts.

‘Suttur Dasara’

Animal husbandry and fisheries department principal secretary K Shivaram opined that suttur Jathra should become ‘Suttur Dasara’ as people from all religions participate in the festivities. He said that the place offers education to people from all classes of society and without regard to religion.

MLA H D Revanna observed that the Suttur Jathra gives the world a glimpse of the rural hinterland. Visitors and students are given food and education.

The festival provides people from rural areas to display their produce and also learn new methods being introduced in agriculture.

Fisheries, science and technology minister Anand Asnotikar, Union minister of state for health and family welfare S Gandhi Selvan, former minister M P Narendraswamy and others were present.
