Outgoing top cop put order in place during his term

For outgoing police commissioner Sunil Agarwal, his stint in the city remains close to his heart for making a career high achievement. Besides, it was during his tenure the city saw many a firsts

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Agarwal said that unearthing of SIM cards fraud, catapulted him to fame giving an opportunity to address DG and IGPs conference in New Delhi over the same issue.

It was also for the first time, such an illegality was cracked where in the document of a genuine customer was duplicated and SIM cards were issued to other parties too. Likewise, many such numerous numbers (cards) were detected, which eventually led to the arrest of an executive besides few others.

Agarwal said another case which garnered nationwide attention was that of arresting Trichy Gang of Tamil Nadu, cracking high-profile theft case at Karnataka Bank, D Devaraj Urs road branch. The gang of 29 had decamped with Rs 23.5 lakh in cash from the Bank in 2011 after succeeding in diverting the attention of a cashier. The city crime branch (CCB) which was investigating into the case succeeded in nabbing the gang in Shirdi in Maharashtra State. It was also for the first time, highest of accused in a case were held and also for the gang. The gang till then had struck at banks in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and several other States too, but had remained elusive.

If going by the records available, Agarwal in his two years and seven months tenure starting from June 27, 2009, introduced an array of programmes- Shubodaya ( early morning operation), operation sunset, operation Chamundi (for Chamundi Hill) and operation midnight. Police Control Room (PCR) vehicles to meet emergency, also hit the roads. Close to 23 cameras were installed in different parts of the city to check crime and traffic offenders.  Mention must be made of ‘Namma Mane Police’ and ‘Namma Shale Police’ aimed at improving the relations between men in khaki and public.

In the case of the latter that was launched recently, the traffic police were entrusted with the task of teaching basics of traffic rules for school students.
