BJP legislators want voters' name on EC website

A section of the BJP legislators and leaders has petitioned the Office of Chief Electoral Officer that the names of voters for the teachers and graduates constituency elections should be hosted on the Election Commission’s website.

The legislators, who presented a memorandum to Chief Electoral Officer Surajan in Bangalore on Friday, said hosting of names on the web would facilitate political parties to approach them. It is not possible to approach all voters, especially those who register their names just days before the election process begins, they said.

Former minister Ramachandra Gowda, MLC Ashwathnarayana, MLA S Raghu, BJP media co-ordinator Prakash were among those who met Suranjan.

The memorandum said elections to the Legislative Council from three graduates and three teachers constituencies were scheduled for June this year. Unlike the general elections, the composition of voters in these constituencies is specific in nature and precise in character which makes it difficult for political parties to reach them.

Each constituency is spread over many districts and hence it is difficult to reach voters. The only way for parties to convey their message is through the post. Even the Election Commission does not make sustained efforts to persuade graduates and teachers who are voters to register themselves as a voter though it is mandatory.

The Election Commission must host the names of voters on its website and update the same as it would help both voters as well as political parties, the BJP leaders said.
