The Supreme Court verdict to cancel all the 122 2G licences issues by the DMK’s minister in the Union cabinet, had the expected reactions in the two major parties of Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

The DMK, which is the party of A Raja and a key ally of the ruling UPA at the Centre, maintained a strategic silence over the cancellation of the licenses and also the inclusion of Chidambaram in the case, while its rival the AIADMK was vocal in welcoming the verdict.

DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, after attending a 90-minute meeting of the party’s high-level Policy Making body at its headquarters here, had no formal word of reaction to the Supreme Court developments earlier in the day, but sources in DMK said they have to study it and consult their lawyers before offering their views.
However- amid a rare show of solidarity in the DMK as all its next-generation leaders were present at the meeting including M K Stalin, his bete noire elder M K Azhagiri, their half-sister and Rajya Sabha MP, Ms Kanimozhi and former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran from the  “Maran branch” of the family- Karunanidhi appeared quite cheerful.

The party leader however, sent word through a functionary that there would not be any statements for the media.

Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, in a brief interaction with the media, termed the Supreme Court verdict on inclusion of Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G case as a “welcome step”, adding, “I prefer to wait and see what happens in the Special Court.”

Asked about the Centre strongly defending Chidambaram and blaming it all on Raja, she said, “irrespective of what the Central Government may say, it’s for the Court to pronounce the final verdict.”
