Soon, students to have it easy choosing a PU college

DPUE to publish details about facilities available in govt, pvt colleges

From the next academic year (2012-13) onwards, pre-university aspirants will be able to know everything about each government or private college they intend to get into.

That is, all relevant details of each college — from its teaching staff to the library, fee structure to subject combinations, playground to computer laboratory, reservation of seats to total intake, etc — will be accessible to students and parents to enable them to make better choices.

The Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) has embarked on a process to know everything about the colleges under its jurisdiction. The DPUE has just completed the survey of government colleges. It is now in the process of seeking details of the facilities in private aided and unaided colleges.

The details have been sought in a new format designed by the DPUE to renew the affiliation of the colleges, a senior DPUE official, who did not want to be named, said.
In a circular issued on February 1, the DPUE has asked all private colleges to apply for renewal of their affiliation. It has attached a 44-page checklist and sought various supporting records/documents from each college. The details have to be submitted by February 15.

The DPUE will grant or reject affiliation after a critical study of the applications. It will randomly inspect a few colleges.

The entire process will be over by the end of March. Thereafter, DPUE will make the details public.

That means, when the admission season starts after the declaration of SSLC examination results, students will have all details about the colleges they plan to seek admission to. Hence, they will be able to make better choices.

“It’s a student-friendly measure. Once the details are made public, students will be able to know whether a college he/she wishes to apply for has the desired subject combination, etc,” a DPUE official told Deccan Herald.

The new system will be a welcome change from the present one in which students and parents have no credible information about the facilities available in a particular college. In the existing set-up, it is only through word of mouth that students get to know about a college.

While a few colleges have built a reputation for themselves and are known for the good facilities they offer, a large number of institutes do not have the required facilities. Consequently, students know little until they take admission into the colleges and regret their decision later.

Renewal of affiliation
These colleges should apply for renewal of affiliation:
* Colleges that were granted academic approval in 2005-06 or before. Previously, these institutes were accorded affiliation from 2006-07 to 2010-11.
* Colleges which were opened after obtaining the government approval in 2006-07, but have not renewed their affiliation.
* Under Section 36 and 38 of the Karnataka Education Act, 1983, DPUE will grant affiliation to private colleges on the basis of their facilities.
* Section 7 of the PU Education Rules, 2006, has laid down certain yardsticks to be checked while granting affiliation to private colleges.
The yardsticks are: minimum facilities, payment of affiliation fee, maintenance of minimum and maximum intake, recruitment of staff as per soft pattern in unaided colleges, etc.
