The Rotary Club of Bangalore Cantonment recently installed a new team of office-bearers for  2016-17.

The event was attended by all the members of the club. Rotarian District Governor H R Ananth installed Rotarian Prem Kurian as the incoming president for 2016-17 and Rotarian K Samy as the secretary of the club. The new board members were also duly installed.

The club has completed 32 years. The members have identified certain areas that need help and have accordingly chalked out activities for the current year.

The highlights are the Rotary School at Channapatna. It has about 300 students. The aim has been to provide good teachers, infrastructure and scholarships for the students. Another project, the Nelliguda Medical Centre at Bidadi for the rural poor, provides free checkup and medicines.

The theme for this year, informs Prem Kurian, is Rotary serving humanity. Prem said, “Our aim will be to enhance the lives in the community in the fields of literacy, healthcare and empowerment of women. We will work towards achieving these goals.”

Rotary has also added a fully functional state-of-the-art paediatric ventilator to the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology. The club also provides mid-day meals for about 450 students at Shri Guru Harkishan High School, Ulsoor, with assistance from Essae Chandran Foundation. Another highlight of the club is the ‘International Peace, Understanding and Goodwill Award’ presented to Camphill India in March 2016 along with Rs one lakh. Camphill aims to create an environment in which people with disabilities can learn to live with their limitations. The club also supports Rotaract Clubs, Interact Clubs and Kinderact Clubs at several schools and colleges. The idea is to hone leadership qualities, communication skills and build a sense of responsibility among young people.  About the vision of the club, Shailendra Gupta, past president of the club, said, “Our club has grown in strength. Our main aim is to get younger members involved in its activities  and take the vision forward.”
