Stag trapped in snare, dies

A three-year-old stag died after it was trapped in the snare laid by poachers in the forest cover adjoining Muralidhara Mutt Road in Karwar on Friday morning.

The poachers had set a snare in the slope area of the forest cover which also has a small rivulet. The antlers of a stag which was roaming in the area was caught in the noose. A passer-by noticed the stag struggling in the snare and immediately informed the forest officials.The stag was alive when forest officials tried to free the animal from the snare.

However, it died even before the officers freed it from the snare. The postmortem report revealed that stag had died of shock and exhaustion after it was caught in the snare, said RFO Jagannath.
