3 orphanage staffers held

1 accused of rape, 2 for sodomy

Three staffers of Arya Anathalaya were arrested on Saturday evening in two separate cases of sexual abuse at the Arya orphanage in Darya Ganj area of central Delhi, police said.

Navratan, a security guard, was arrested for raping an 11-year-old girl who died on December 24.

Chief warden Surendra Singh Chauhan and warden Ramesh Maurya were held in connection with the case of sodomy on a nine-year-old boy, said Devesh Chandra Srivastva, additional commissioner of police (central).

The girl, a Class 3 student, had died after she was admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital on complaints of vomiting and diarrhoea.

A post-mortem revealed that she had also been subjected to repeated sexual abuse. A 13-year-old boy has also been apprehended in the case.

Navratan’s arrest came after a classmate of the girl accused him of taking her friend to a toilet in the orphanage and then sexually abusing her.

“The Class 3 student named him as an accused before a juvenile judge on Saturday. She said that she had seen Navratan taking the victim girl inside a toilet,” a senior police officer said.

“After attending her classes, when she went to find out where her friend was, she found her lying in the toilet and writhing in pain,” he added. The friend took her to their warden, but she ignored the incident.

A case under sections 376 (rape) and 377 (unnatural offenses) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Navratan at Jama Masjid police station.

Surendra and Ramesh were arrested under section 23 of the Justice Juvenile Act. They were  working with the orphanage for the past two years.
