Last Updated 19 February 2012, 20:31 IST

A 24-year-old mother of two reportedly set herself ablaze in Indiranagar here on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Parents of Aiyamma alias Sujatha alleged that her husband Eshwarappa (26) had “tortured” her so much that she was forced to end her life.

Sujatha, a construction worker, allegedly doused herself with kerosene when no one was at her makeshift home in the cellar of an under-construction apartment complex on 6th Cross, 2nd Main, Defence Colony, Indiranagar, around 2.30 pm. Eshwarappa had gone out to bring groceries.

Two women staying nearby rushed to the shed when they heard Sujatha’s wails. She died about 15 minutes later, before any medical help could be extended to her, police said.

The couple was married in 2008, and had a son, three-year-old Bagesh, and a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Jayashri. They were working at the apartment complex being constructed by Marvel Realtors.

Police were called in around 4 pm. Sujatha’s parents, Eshwar and Devaramma, who are also construction workers and stay in Koramangala, blamed Eshwarappa for the death. They said Eshwarappa used to pester their daughter, which eventually forced her to commit suicide.

Police said they are yet to arrest Eshwarappa, as the victim’s family later changed their statement.

“Devaramma had first lodged a complaint of dowry death, but later the family sought to blame the victim’s employer, apparently to get monetary compensation,” Kumar D, Indiranagar Police Inspector, said.

The body has been kept at the Bowring Hospital for post-mortem. Police have lodged a case of dowry harassment and abetment of suicide under Sections 498 (A) and 306 respectively of the IPC.
