Nalini's death: Four officers suspended for negligence

Last Updated 26 February 2012, 19:32 IST

Four officials of the Fire and Emergency Services, including two District Fire Officers (DFOs), were suspended on Sunday for their “negligence” in the death of a 24-year-old garment factory worker during a mock fire drill last week.

Devaraju, DFO, Peenya; K Narayanaswamy, DFO, Hebbal; Nisar Ahmad, Fire Station Officer (FSO), High Grounds; and Marianna, FSO, Yeshwanthpur, have been suspended after the Fire and Emergency Services conducted a probe in the death of Nalini.

“The report of the probe is expected in a week,” A R Infant, DGP, Fire and Emergency Services, said.

The four officers have been suspended for “not following” the standard operating norms while conducting drills.

“They should have tested the quality of the rope before using it for the mock drill,” Infant added.

Besides, the officers did not arrange for enough cushions at the various points on the ground, the DGP said.

Nalini had volunteered to jump off the third floor of Bombay Rayon Fashion Ltd in Peenya Industrial Area on Friday only to find the rope snapping. Her shocked colleagues and the fire brigade officials watched in disbelief as she plunged to death.
