Traders to stage 'dharna' on March 16

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Monday said it will organise a day-long dharna of traders, farmers and hawkers across the country to oppose FDI in multi-brand retail.

“To protest against Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, we have chalked out a countrywide action plan including a one-day dharna by all stakeholders on March 16,” said CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal.

CAIT members are expected to meet chief ministers and leaders of opposition parties in states like Haryana and Gujarat next month to oppose FDI in the sector, he said. The confederation claimed it has a membership of over five crore traders across India.

The policy to allow 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail was put on hold by the government after strong objection from opposition parties.

To reach a consensus on the issue of allowing FDI in retail sector, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion has held discussions with small groups of stakeholders.
