Two elderly persons were arrested for allegedly carrying fake currency with a face value of Rs 20,000, police said on Monday.

“Sharafat Khan, 65, and Yusuf Khan, 55, were arrested in Karol Bagh on February 21 on a tip-off,” said Ashok Chand, deputy commissioner of police (crime).

Sharafat, the alleged kingpin, hails from Rampur in UP while Yusuf is from Mathura. The fake notes with a face value of Rs 20,000 were in Rs 100 denomination. Police said Sharafat used to get fake notes from Rampur and supply them in Delhi and other parts of the country.

The notes were printed on good quality paper and appeared quite genuine, police said. He allegedly got Yusuf involved in his gang to circulate the currency in Delhi and NCR. Sharafat was also involved in drug trafficking cases and was arrested in 2002.

“While in jail, he got in touch with Yusuf Khan, who was also behind bars in a drug trafficking case. After they were released from jail, they started supplying fake notes,” Chand said.
