Contract workers prone to accident

Almost 75 per cent of the accidents that take place in industries involve workers employed on contract basis, said Labour Minister B N Bache Gowda.

Speaking at a conference on safety, health and work environment held as part of the 41st National Safety Day celebration on Sunday, he said employers should ensure that workers are trained and are provided adequate protective gears.

Karnataka has 13,396 registered factories and 3,336 registered boilers and nearly 13.5  lakh workers. There are about 1,092 hazardous units of which 77 are classified as major hazard units. As per the records of 2010-2011, there have been 83 fatal accidents and 769 non-fatal accidents in the industrial sector in the State.

The two-day conference will see a host of delegates speak on aspects of safety in work environment and good practices to follow.
