Though the state government has released Rs two crore for the widening of roads in Vittal town, the officials have not yet started the work.

The tender for the same has not been invited so far. The department had chalked out plans to widen the road by 33 feet.

The state government has already released Rs two crore to take up the work on widening of the road from Kallakatta bridge in Vittal to the guest house on school road. Even after one year, the work has not  started.

The congested roads in Vittal are a nightmare for the vehicle users. Specially, heavy vehicle drivers have to use their skills on congested roads. Traffic snarls are common but it gets worse on Tuesdays, when there is weekly market.  Even the private bus stand is congested and lacks space. The vehicle users, bus drivers, students and the general public find it difficult to drive the vehicles in the morning and evening.

Opposition

While few traders have willingly handed over their land for road widening, few merchants in Vittal are opposing the project. Deputy Commissioner had visited Vittal thrice and held meetings with the traders.

The Executive Engineer during his recent visit to Vittal had said that the decision on widening the road will be taken after holding meeting with those traders who are opposing the move.

The officials say that as per the plan, the electric poles will be shifted. The road will be widened by 16.5 feet from the middle of the road, on both the sides. A circle would be constructed at a junction where four roads meet, to facilitate the easy movement of vehicles. Storm water drains would be constructed beside the road to let rain water flow easily.

As Brahmakalashotsava of Vittal Panchalingeshwara temple will be held within few months, lakhs of devotees will visit Vittal, which will add to the existing problems, if roads are not widened, the local residents say.
