Official resists robbers, stabbed 6 times

A 60-year-old Indian Trade Service official was stabbed six times by two robbers when he confronted them in the balcony of his house at Vasant Kunj in south Delhi, police said.

Vijay Kumar Gupta is currently posted as an additional director general of foreign trade under the ministry of commerce and trade, while his wife Kusum, 54, is a teacher at Air Force Senior Secondary School at Old Wellington Camp in Race Course Road.

They were at their house in Vasant Kunj block 5 when the incident took place around 9:15 pm on Friday.

“The couple were watching television in the living room when some movement in the balcony drew Vijay’s attention. To check if something was wrong, he opened the wooden door that separates the living room and the balcony

“ As soon as he stepped in the balcony and switched on a bulb, two armed men pounced upon him,” a police official said.

Vijay was stabbed at least six times in various parts of his body, including lower abdomen, chest, arm and thigh.

Later, when one of the assailants tried to get inside the living room, Kusum pushed the door and locked it from inside and shouted for help.

Her screams were heard by Subhash Tomar, a residents’ welfare association member, who raised an alarm.

“My house is a few metres behind the balcony of Vijay’s residence. I was shaving in my bathroom when I saw the two robbers scuffling with Vijay. I grabbed a hockey stick and went downstairs,” Subhash said.

However, when the residents came near the balcony the robbers jumped down and escaped.

“Vijay and Kusum had locked the door at the ground floor, which prevented neighbours from reaching them,” the official added. Vijay was immediately escorted by his neighbours to nearby Fortis Hospital.

A case under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) has been registered against unknown persons at Vasant Kunj (north) police station.

“Presently, there are no suspects. The motive of the intruders was burglary. We are investigating the case,” the official said.
