Rain flattens crop fields in Davangere

Widespread rain which lashed the district on Thursday night has caused extensive damage to standing crops on 170 acres.

A farmer attempted suicide unable to bear the shock of crop loss. Davangere and Jagalur taluks have borne the brunt of gusty winds and heavy rain.

Banana plantations raised with an investment of lakhs of rupees have been razed to the ground overnight.

Twenty houses collapsed and roofs of eight houses were blown off in Davangere.

Crops on 100 acres of land have been damaged. Walls of 10 houses collapsed and crops on 70 acres were destroyed in Jagalur taluk.

Deputy Commissioner S S Pattanashetty put the loss at Rs 1.70 crore. Electricity poles were uprooted in several villages.

Anjinappa, a farmer in Muggidaragi village of Jagalur taluk, attempted suicide by consuming poison after his four-acre banana plantation was razed to the ground.

He has been admitted to the district hospital and his condition is stated to be critical.
