Borewell issue creates drift

Mangalore Special Ecoomic Zone (MSEZ) rehabilitation colony, which is reeling under acute water crisis, had kept a request before the MSEZ through Hitharakshana Samiti seeking for borewells.

However, on Saturday night, when Company sent some individuals to identify place for digging bore, an individual in the colony objected to the same.

This amounted to a sort of heated argument between the residents of the Colony as the Company representatives returned from the spot without doing much to solve the problem.

Acknowledging the request  the Company had promised to send some representatives on Saturday evening to identify spot for digging borewell. When the representatives came, an individual from the Colony who has managed to dig a private bore for himself raised objection. This attitude raged rest of the residents who charged the individual of being selfish. They said that since the individual has adequate water from in his bore, he is not bothered about the scenario existing in the colony.

The residents said the individual was scared that the water level in his bore well would deplete if the company digs bores in the colony.

“There are more than 20 families in the colony, which have to struggle to get even a tumbler of water. This person who is raising objection to the move of the company has no such hassles,” said a resident adding that since the place identified by the company to dig borewell is far from the individual’s bore well it would have not implication on his bore.

Samiti Member Muktananda Melanta said since the land on which the company has decided to dig bore well is not a private land, the company need not think twice before digging the bore. “Providing water to the rehabilitated families is the responsibility of the company,” he said further questioning the person who has raised object whether he would supply water to the remaining 20 odd families from his bore in case the company backs out from digging the bore.

As many as 100 persons waited at the spot for the company representatives to arrive along with the bore well digging machine, from 4 pm to 9 pm. Surprisingly, the bore well contractor and the company engineer who visited the spot returned from the spot just listening to the objection raised by one individual. However, the colony residents have given a warningl to the company and said that if the company fails to provide water to the rehabilitated families, then they would picket the DC’s office.
