Illegal water connections found

City Municipal Councils drive was led by Commissioner Shalini

Seven illegal water connections were disconnected in a drive by the City Municipal Council (CMC) on Tuesday.

Based on the complaint that many people had obtained illegal water connections from the main pipelines which drew water from borewells at Ammerahalli and Maderahalli.

The drive to disconnect illegal water connections at 7.30 am and it went on till 8 pm. Two earthmovers were used for detecting illegal connections. CMC Commissioner R Shalini led the drive.

The team of CMC staff arrived to 16th ward at Shaheed Nagar and started their work near Clock Tower.

Within minutes the first illegal water connection was found and was disconnected immediately. Proceeding further four more illegal connections were found by afternoon. As the staff had to be careful not to break the pipeline, the work was delayed.

The persons who had got connection illegally used three inch wide pipe and connected it to the main pipeline and pulled water, said Sampath Kumar, Engineer.

This drive was not planned and people were not informed earlier about it. So, there was no exact information from the vaulvemen nor from the residents about possible illegal connections.

Though it took long time to detect each illegal connection, CMC staff were present all throughout and did not close the drive. By 7 pm, the team was successful in tracing seven illegal connections.

Hundreds of police personnel were deployed to avoid any resistance to the drive. Apart from CMC Commissioner R Shalini, police personnel and Additional Deputy Commissioner Peddappaiah, Additional Commissioner Ayeesha Parveen and tahsildar Muniveerappa were present.

Allegations

Some of the residents expressed happiness over the action by the CMC. But many alleged that inaction so far by local representatives at CMC were responsible for increasing number of illegal water connections.

They alleged that local representatives gave permission to the people to get illegal connection and demanded action against such persons.

Junior Engineer Srinivasappa, Environment Engineer Sagar, four Vavlemen, eight persons to repair leakage participated in the drive.
