A 19-year-old Delhi University student committed suicide by hanging himself at his rented house in Model Town of north-west Delhi on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Samiran Sethia, a first-year student of Bachelor of Science in Botany Honours at Hindu College.

His friend Uppal had found him hanging by a rope tied to the ceiling fan in his Vijay Nagar room around 11:30 am.

“A police control room van rushed to the spot and took Samiran to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital in Jahangirpuri, where he was declared brought dead,” a senior police official said, adding no suicide note was found in the room.

Samiran, who hailed from Assam, had been living there for past one year. “Preliminary investigation suggests that he might have taken the extreme step due to exam pressures. He was afraid that he might fail in exam,” the official added.

Police are investigating the incident under section 176 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

They have also informed the father of deceased.

“The body will be handed over to his family after a post-mortem at the hospital. The exact cause behind the death can only be confirmed after his family comes from Assam,” the official said.

Police have also taken the statements of Samiran’s friends and batchmates.
