MPs demand better deal for N-E people

Last Updated 02 May 2012, 19:33 IST

Days after a student from Meghalaya allegedly committed suicide in a Gurgaon university, MPs from the North-East on Wednesday raised the plight of people from the region living in metros and said discrimination against them should end.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour, Ramen Deka (BJP) demanded a statement from the home minister on the measures taken by the government to protect the interests of the people, especially women, from the region in the wake of several incidents of rape and molestation in the national capital territory region. He alleged that on several occasions police have failed to take action on complaints of crimes committed against women from the North-East.

He gave out a number of incidents since 2005 in support of his argument. Khagen Das (CPM) said the alleged suicide by Dana Sangma and the alleged murder of Richard Loitam in Bangalore are examples of cultural gap between the North-East and the rest of country.
